In a year marked by relentless challenges, from catastrophic wildfires, deep clawbacks to environmental justice funding and federal immigration raids, Southern California’s philanthropic and civic communities have responded with extraordinary courage. This virtual funder convening invites grantmakers from across the region and beyond to reflect on the bold actions our communities have taken, and to build the relationships and strategies needed to meet this moment with even greater resolve.
Hosted in the spirit of SCG’s 2025 Annual Conference theme, Acts of Courage, this interactive, virtual funder convening for the SCG Environmental Funders Group will focus on building cross-issue connections among funders working at the intersection of democracy, environmental justice, climate resilience and power building. Through structured networking, small-group dialogues and creative mapping exercises, participants will explore what it takes to fund with vision and integrity in the face of escalating threats to civil society.
This gathering is not just about learning—it’s about connection. Funders will engage in curated peer-to-peer exchanges and co-create a visual “match map” of shared interests, courageous experiments, and potential collaborations. Whether you are already funding at these intersections or looking to deepen your commitment, this session offers a unique space to surface aligned strategies and foster the trust necessary for future joint action.
Join us as we explore what courageous philanthropy looks like in practice—and how, together, we can build a more resilient, just, and democratic Southern California.
Outcomes
- Build stronger relationships between funders across a spectrum of issue areas
- Enhance funder knowledge and awareness
- Seed ideas for potential funder collaboration and advocacy
About the SCG Environmental Funders Group
The Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) Environmental Funders Group meets quarterly to educate prospective and current environmental funders about environmental challenges and opportunities in Southern California as well as foster collaboration and share successes and challenges. This convening concept was developed in partnership between members of the SCG Environmental Funders Steering Committee, SCG staff, and Ron Milam (who as a consultant, helps organize these convenings).
