Housing is among our most essential human needs and rights. And while a national problem, the housing epidemic plays out in place, impacting community stability, economic opportunity and better life outcomes for families and children.
Tackling housing and homelessness takes multi-sector, long-term partnerships; approached holistically, it provides opportunities for multiple benefits.
This upcoming webinar features creative multi-sector partnerships underway in two smaller urban communities in Linn County, Iowa and Bellingham, Washington.
In this funder-only session, community and community foundation leaders will share how they have helped catalyze, develop, and grow these initiatives in different ways with multiple investment and implementation partners at the table.
The Alliance for Equitable Housing is a multi-jurisdictional partnership in Linn County and Cedar Rapids, IA tackling housing quality, energy efficiency and resilience, housing scarcity, and housing for unhoused individuals. The partnership grew out of earlier work to better understand housing needs and homelessness in the wake of the pandemic and derecho storm event.
The Millworks Project is a 2-phase community benefit development led by the Whatcom Community Foundation in Bellingham, Washington. Built on a former pulp mill brownfield site and developed with multiple partners, phase one created permanent affordable rental housing and an early learning center. Phase two, now in development, will create a local food business incubator, a nonprofit hub, commercial and residential spaces, community open space, and offices for the community foundation. Both phases received critical impact investments from the community foundation.
