Overview
Communities on the frontlines of climate change are developing innovative solutions to protect their neighborhoods, strengthen local economies, and build long-term resilience. Yet too often, the available capital is short-term, fragmented, or mismatched with community needs. Addressing this gap requires a broader understanding of the capital stack and a more coordinated approach to aligning different types of funding around community-defined priorities. This session will provide a framework for thinking about how philanthropy can help connect and strengthen the financial resources needed to move climate and resilience solutions from vision to implementation and scale.
This session will focus on the financial tools and investment strategies required to move substantial, long-term capital into frontline climate solution — blending philanthropic, public, and private resources in ways that center community priorities, build local power, and support durable climate resilience. Funders will examine how PRIs, CDFIs, green banks, endowments, patient capital, impact investments, donor-advised funds, and family office strategies can be aligned to meet the moment.
The conversation will help philanthropy distinguish trusted intermediaries and effective financial vehicles, explore pathways for bringing investors and communities to the table as partners, and identify opportunities to strengthen financial education across the funding community. Participants will also consider how different forms of capital can work together across the investment continuum—from early-stage support and capacity building to project finance and long-term ownership. The session aims to equip funders with practical strategies for deploying capital that is durable, equitable, community-centered, and positioned to scale climate resilience throughout California.
This convening is part of a quarterly conversation series hosted by the Southern California Grantmakers Environmental Funders Group.
