This in-person convening, structured as a site visit to Baldwin Hills, comes at a pivotal moment as the draft ordinance to phase out oil drilling moves to the Planning Commission and City Council in early 2026. Funders will examine the current 20-year phase-out proposal, the implications of the state’s new authority allowing cities to regulate drilling, and ongoing efforts to accelerate a just transition — including compensation, timelines, and negotiations with industry. More info is available in this LA Times article.
The visit will also ground participants in the complex land-use possibilities emerging for the site — parks, housing, renewable energy, battery storage — none of which yet have a clearly defined pathway. Funders will explore strategies to strengthen local capacity, support land trusts and public land planning, and prepare the financing tools and acquisition funds needed over the next three years. This session offers a timely opportunity to ensure the transition is community-driven, equitable, and aligned with long-term regional resilience.
Lunch will be provided after the convening, with an optional hike before or after.
